酒米の中耕除草作業を行いました
5月29日（水）に酒米の中耕除草作業を行いました。今回の活動は、「大学オリジナルの日本酒造り」のための作業であり、現代社会学部英語国際キャリア専攻の4人の学生とプロジェクトリーダーのマーク‧フランク准教授が参加しました。
中耕作業とは、有機栽培のお米を作るときに発生するガスを床土から抜き、土を混ぜて稲に栄養を行き渡らせやすくするものです。この作業で使用する用具には除草機能も付いており、稲と稲の間に生えた雑草の除去も同時に行いました。
作業には体力が必要で、汗をかきましたが、5月晴れの気温もあまり高くない日だったため、気持ちよく進められました。また、田んぼの周りの草たちが綺麗な花を咲かせており、季節の変わり目を感じられました。
自分たちの稲の成長も観察でき、これからの成長過程を見るのがより楽しみになりました。
On May 29th, we did traditional farmwork called “inter-row cultivation and weeding.” When growing organic rice, gases generated from the decomposing organic material in the soil needs to be removed to allow nutrients to reach the roots of the rice plants. At the same time, new weeds which have sprouted in the field need to be cut before they get too big. The “inter-row cultivation and weeding tool,” seen in the photographs, performs both tasks at the same time. Using this traditional tool required physical strength as well as skill, and we worked up a sweat. Fortunately, the sunny weather and comfortable temperature made the work enjoyable. By the end, we were able to use the tool successfully. Moreover, the plants around the rice field were blooming beautifully, reminding us of the changing seasons. We could see the growth of the rice plants only two weeks after planting and are excited to see their progress from now.
